CHAPTER SIX

‘Ant! Are you OK?’ Will’s voice carried over  the link. It came through loud and clear inside the helmet of the Shadow Knight. Ant forced himself to slow his breathing. Panicking wouldn’t help anyone. He took a second before replying.

‘I’m OK, Dad!’ he called.

‘Phew! You had me worried. Get back up here now.’

But that was easier said than done. The nearby magma explosions had disturbed the silt from the sea bed, forcing it to drift upwards in huge clouds of dust and grit that swirled around Ant’s Knight. It was like wading through a murky, muddy pond. He couldn’t see which way was up, never mind his way back to the Moon Pool.

‘Um … that might take a while …’ he said, turning around in the water for a clue of where to swim. He couldn’t see the lights of the sub or the floor of the ocean. The only thing he could make out was …

‘Uh-oh.’

A giant fin cut through the murk of the water. Ant saw it and turned, but it had gone instantly. He turned again and spotted it out of the corner of his eye, getting closer. What was it? A creature of some sort, but what?

A tail appeared through the gloom and swung at him. Thankfully the current pushed him away, and the Shadow Knight careered up through the water.

‘Whooooaaaa!’ he yelled. He landed with a thud against something and he rested on it while the silt cleared. ‘What on earth –?’
